Steeples Just Don’t Care

Convinced that steeples just don’t care
About the lives and hurts outside
Holding up their walls within
And keeping strangers out

Running for the door of safety
Never taking missions out
Come to church and learn of Jesus
Four walls keeping scripture in

Feed the hungry with your two hands
Give the money with a smile
Feel as if you’ve really helped
As if you’ve been there touching smells

Preach from pulpit of those in need
Sunday school, disciple’s creed
Mission trip comes once a year
Community abandoned, you see?

All this talk and beating chest
Of all you’ve done for those without
Your feet are clean from all the mess
Steepled walls keep the smells away

Invite them in through card and letters
Knock on doors and shake their hands
Speak to old and falling down
Maybe thanksgiving and a must for Christmas

Calender spot for all of them
Who need you more than words can say
Feeling good about yourself
Because you drove the van that day

What about morrow when the eve is over?
What about next week or two
Back into the walls of Jesus you go
Seeking shelter from the dirt and smell

Come to Jesus, come one, come all
We have everything you need
Come in from rain come in from cold
Hear the Word, the Gospel preached

Our goal to be the hands and feet
If hands can keep me touching walls
And feet can take me to the pew
Anything to keep away from you

Once a year I’ve done my time
I’ll never be the same
Returning home as tears run down
Looking forward to next year

Shout from pulpit of those in need
Sunday school, planting seeds
Mission trips come once a year
Community abandoned, you see?

Poetic quotes from a 9 year old.

"Poetry to me is like the sound of music. Music is like poetry. Any way I put it, His love for me is bigger than any ocean, taller than any mountain or even wider than the extra miles I go."
- Molly Conley

"Without Him I was just drifting like a ship with a sail. Then I found Him, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I was lost but now I'm found. I was standing in darkness. Shine some light on me. S.O.S., I'm drowning in an ocean of sin. Don't fret, you may get wet but hold on, help is on its way."
- Molly Conley

"This heart can love for miles, no matter how hot or cold, but I still have miles to go"
- Molly Conley
